Joe Heywood, K-8 Principal / Academic Administrator
I was born and raised in Los Angeles but married into a Wyoming family. My wife and I recently settled permanently amid her family in Star Valley after wanting to move here for the past 20 years. I have spent my entire 18 or so professional years in public education. I have taught middle school, junior high, and high school English and history. I have been an elementary school principal, a high school assistant principal, and a state compliance manager and education specialist at the Utah State Office of Education serving all the state's public charter schools. I completed my bachelor’s degree in History Teaching at BYU, my masters in Educational Leadership at Northern Arizona University, and my doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at Utah State University. My wife and I have 4 kids, the oldest in college, the youngest in 5th grade. I am an avid outdoorsman - hunting, fishing, and backpacking - and I am a long-distance runner (just ran the Buffalo Run 50 Miler on Antelope Island in March). I read widely, especially history and biographies, and I keep busy with projects around the house (we just put in a large garden and tiled a new bathroom). I love working with kids and great teachers in providing the kind of educational experience that I wanted as a kid and that I want for my own kids. I am really excited to be working for Wyoming Virtual Academy and hope to be with the school for many years.
Jennifer Merten will be our new WYVA Testing Coordinator.
I am a former High School and Middle School Spanish teacher and I also worked as a Program Coordinator for four years with Big Brothers Big Sisters. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a Master’s in Bilingual and Multicultural Education (Secondary Education). I grew up in Wyoming, but lived in Arizona and Las Vegas for the last 17 years. I knew I wanted to raise my kids in Wyoming, and was so excited to be able to return last summer. My family love to do things like camping, travelling and rock/gem hunting. I also enjoy reading and home improvement projects.
